After reading a certain Romeo & Juliet themed Refinery post, I was made aware of a little gem called Tromeo & Juliet, brought to us by Troma Films (so, if you’re into weird, effed up gore and sex, you’re in for a great time). Set in 1996 Manhattan, and dubbed “A modern, punk adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic.”, let’s begin..
I mean, the movie starts out with Lemmy narrating.. so you already know this is gonna be amazing.
Tromeo is a quintessential stoner-esque 90s babe, played by Will Keenan.
Tromeo’s best friend, Murray (aka Mercutio, who’s allusion to being gay is blatantly outed when he dies)
Benny, Tromeo’s cousin who plays a serious hottie tattoo artist and nipple piercer in the film
And finally, Tromeo’s “father”, Monty Que. Real classy.
Now for the Capulets..
Beautiful, also quintessential 90s babe, Juliet.. played by Jane Jensen who gets regularly locked into a “Time Out Room” for her screaming.. “dreams”.
Juliet’s cousin, certified psychopath and incest enthusiast, Sammy Capulet
Juliet’s other cousin, the saucy little Georgie who starts off the movie with an (almost) bang
And the most important cousin to Juliet, Tyrone- who is sort of the stone cold thug of the group
Ness, who is apparently the cook, but more importantly is madly in love with Juliet and is her lesbian escape from reality
Momma Capulet, who pulls the entire plot twist together
And finally, the batshit crazy father.. Cappy Capulet (awesome name tho)
This movie is full of allusions to actual Shakespeare in the best 90s garage film way possible. The Que and Capulet feud is rumored to have begun over an independent porn flick business that Monty Que had started and brought Capulet on as a partner- I would love to retell the entire movie for you, but that would spoil the magic. I will tell you that my life is 100% better for having watched it. I highly suggest watching this movie alone in the dark at night and bonus points for being in an “enlightened” state of mind. Here’s a preview to get you stoked:
It’s on Netflix, but if you’re not down the $7.99 fee every month, here it is on YouTube.
