We love to give LOVE to brands we love! Especially, when they hail from our hometown in the Northwest.
Eclectic found material is the source of inspiration for Portland native Julia Barbee. Wanting to pair her love for making, with a historical, philosophical and theoretical background, she went back to school, and in spring of 2011 earned her Master of Fine Arts from California State University, Long Beach. Soon thereafter, she returned to Portland, and in December 2011 she opened her first studio/shop. Her degree work was a process-based study using scent as the platform for sculptural performance, and it is this philosophy of working has just begun to shape this collection of one-of-a-kind pieces. She is excited to see how her line will develop from here.
Her way of creating is a curatorial practice. She spends most of her time looking, honing her eye, examining nature, technology, people, objects. She collects form, texture, line, color and puts together puzzles based on her own frameworks, from the objects she finds.
We love Julia for her interesting mix of found fur and vintage baubles to create whimsical accessories. Her headpieces and necklaces are particularly incredible and unlike anything we’ve seen. I mean, skunk necklace?? Yesssss… So good and creepy!! We featured some of our favorite pieces in the upcoming ON THE ROAD lookbook. And of course, snagged a couple amazing gems for ourselves! Welcome home Pepé..
