I love JC shoes but I think this contest is a little exploitative! Solestruck and JC retain ALL RIGHTS to your artwork FOREVER?!? They can use it for future advertising and create derivative work and just continue to cash in on the winners (or ANY SUBMISSIONS) without paying royalties or fees or anything to the artist.
Normally when there is an art contest the work is used by the publication or company for a limited time but the rights return to the artist indefinitely. This particular contest is a way for solestruck and JC to get free artwork without paying artist the wage and fee they deserve for their creative property. It’s super cagey!
I’m super excited about free shoes and I already started sketching ideas…but free shoes aren’t going to do anything when solestruck is using the winner’s artwork years from now and the artist is eating ramen noodles to stay alive.
THINK ABOUT IT.
