I’m not one to usually watch awards shows. They’re generally pretty boring and uptight. But I happened to be watching TV when the MTV Video Music Awards were on, so I thought, What the hell?, and I decided to watch the red carpet walks and the opening few minutes.
The VMAs are all about celebrating music and being over-the-top. Tokio Hotel arrived in a monster truck, for cripe’s sake. And I’m pretty sure that Switchfoot showed up in costumes…I actually thought they were pretending to be the animated crew from Gorillaz.
But love it or hate it, you have to admit that these awards are full of fashion pizazz and faux-pas. And while most fashionistas would focus on an overall ensemble or maybe the hair and makeup, of course I couldn’t get enough of the crazy shoes! So, if you want to channel the star quality of the VMAs, check out these affordable look-alikes:
This girl-kissing rocker had a lot riding on her tribute performance of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.” And while she made a statement with her risque halter and silky hotpants in girly pastels, she showed off her legs and eccentric style with a pair of metallic fuchsia pumps.
You, too can give rocker edge to your normally soft facade (without shelling out rock-star prices) with a pair of Betseyville Joannah wedge pumps that are strikingly similar to Perry’s look. The metallic fuchsia upper is cool and bright, while an oversized safety-pin detail over the open toe adds a distinctive hard-rock flair.
This former America’s Next Top Model contestant and current MTV correspondent knows how to work the runway as well as the red carpet. At the VMAs, she paired a gorgeous dress with a plunging neckline with some cool and glamorous metallic pumps with ankle strap and criss-crossing open toe.
To duplicate the model’s look, try on a pair of the Nina Grytas that won’t break your bank at $79.95 on Solestruck.com. This gorgeous shoe comes in both metallics and mattes, and gives a classic and elegant silhouette with a lovely covered heel post, combined with a heel cap and ankle strap, topped off with several thin criss-crossing vamp straps over an open toe.
This fashionista and heiress is sure to always walk the fashion line. She knows that an outfit can’t be all bling, or else it’s just too much. For the VMAs, Hilton wore a geometric and sheer dress that was incredibly striking. To offset the initial “outta control” fashion factor, she opted for a more conservative shoe choice–a basic black pointed-toe pump.
Every gal needs a great black pump like this! One of my favorites (and one of our most popular) is the Guess Carrie. If black’s not your thing, this basic pointy toed stiletto comes in several other colors! And at only $89.95, why not get several colors to go with all your fashionable outfits?
The R&B singer not only makes waves with her music (usic-usic-usiccc), but also with her risky often hit-or-miss fashion taste. She’s been known to wear knee-high patent boots, jumpsuits, and thigh-high lace-ups with something that looks like a swim suit.
At the VMAs, she had a few costume changes (she performed in the aforementioned dominatrix-swimsuit ensemble), but on the red-carpet walk, she was seen sporting a punk short skirt and strapless top. And as a fierce finish, she wore contrasting T-strap pumps. And she’s wearing white after Labor Day! Regardless, you can get this awesome leg-complementing look with the sassy Oh Deer! Jamocha for only $69.95! With prices like that, why wouldn’t you wear white after Labor Day?
