Winter Time, and the Livin’ is Easy

A lot of people are under the impression that life as a Floridian is one big vacation. Everyone likes to imagine that down here we spend our days sunbathing by the sea and drinking piña coladas year round. It’s not surprising that for those North of us, who’ve been piling on endless layers every day for months, it’s easy to glance down South and laugh at us putting on our parkas anytime it drops below 60º. What I’d like to tell you, though, is that Winter time in Florida doesn’t come without its challenges. The fickle nature of our Winter forces us (and our closets) to be ready for anything. One day it’s 45º and you just bought a leather trench coat you found on sale at Zara. The next day, as you skip out the door, ready to take your new coat out on an adventure, you find that suddenly it’s 80º. “Hey, Mother Nature,” you might say “I don’t know if you noticed, but I just got this amazing trench coat. I really wanted to take it out for a spin. Besides, It’s MID JANUARY.. what the hell are are you doing?!!” “Yeah, the coat’s great!” she’ll reply “But I thought maybe you could break out that cute Esther Williams swimsuit you got last July and head to the pool, instead?” And so, we in the sunshine state must learn to go with the flow. We must learn to keep our medicine cabinets well stocked, too, since the rapid fluctuations in temperature can make for one hell of a head cold… but that’s another story. Greetings from sunny Florida!

THIS is precisely what I thought I had escaped from when I moved out to LA, but it seems it has followed me since it has been barely warmer than 50 for the past few weeks and all of a sudden this week it was in the mid 70s to low 80s.

I think I brought a little FLA to LA.

    You’re so lovely, James!
At least one of these pics should be framed with a postcard look.
